Dave Tallman - St. Mary's Ryken
Head Coach Dave Tallman recently completed his 6th year with the St. Mary’s Ryken basketball program. In his six years, he has been instrumental in the turn-around of a program who had never won a WCAC conference game. Over the past 5 years, Ryken has won 40 WCAC conference games, increased its overall winning percentage by 65%, had 8 players sign full NCAA basketball scholarships, defeated 17 Post Top 20, and 5 Nationally ranked teams. This season (his 3rd as the head coach), Tallman led his knights to new heights by setting school records for both overall and conference wins.
Though Coach Tallman currently resides in California, MD with his wife Natalie, his hometown is New Martinsville, WV where he captained Magnolia High to the 2000 State championship. He attended Wheeling Jesuit University where he was a member of the Cardinal basketball team while earning his degree in Secondary Math Education. He recently finished his MBA in International Business and teaches both math and business courses at Ryken.
Coach Tallman comes from a very athletically oriented family. His father is 11-1 as a coach at the West Virginia State Tournament (including 2 state titles), his brother Daniel was a student assistant for Coach John Beilein at West Virginia, and his brother Nate was a member of WVU’s 2006 Sweet Sixteen tournament team. Tallman gives a lot of credit to his mentors Danny Sancomb (Wheeling Jesuit: who he assisted at SMR during his 1st 3 seasons at the school), John Beilein (Michigan), Jay DeFruscio (Indiana Pacers), and of course his mother Carol and father Dave Sr.
